My Learning Goals

1a.Skills:

Public Speaking

I get up on the stage, or just in front of the room. I look around and see millions of eyes staring at me. My knees nearly give way. Luckily, though, I manage to find myself mumbling out the final words. Immediately, once the applause (if any) dies down, I rush back to my seat.

This is what I think of when I picture public speaking. Luckily, this has never happened to me before. However, there's always a first time for everything. So the reason I want to practise more public speaking is because: 1. I want to be able to speak more loudly. 2. I want to be able to improvise more because I might lose my cue cards. 3. I definitely don't want that situation happening.

Using and Writing Blogs

I think that, to be able to use and write blogs, is very interesting. It may or may not help in my future career(s), but I still want to be able to use and write a blog properly. I have tried to write a blog once before, but that kind of... failed.

Essay Writing Skills

Writing... is definitely not one of my main strengths. Being brought up in a Vietnamese-speaking-only household, I had to wait until I was in kinder to finally be able to learn English. Up until year 7, I had never really written essays before and have only written around 6 altogether. I want to sharpen my essay writing skills because I believe it will certainly help in my future, both near and far-off.

1b.Knowledge:

Melbourne Streets

I live practically next door to the city, but I've never really ventured there until last year. I really want to know not just where the streets are, but also where the main buildings/ places (e.g. Melbourne Central, QV...) are. This is important because of the upcoming trails this term, and I also consider this as general knowledge.

First Aid

OH MY GOD!!! I JUST GOT BITTEN BY A SNAKE. WHAT SHOULD I DO? or MY BROTHER HAS FALLEN OVER AND HIS KNEE IS GUSHING OUT LITERS OF BLOOD. WHAT SHOULD I DO??? These are two of many different situations that could happen anytime, anywhere if I didn't know any basic first aid, my brother and I would be dead by now.  First aid is something everyone should know, even if it is basic. Knowing first aid might mean the difference between life and death.

Essay Planning

Like before, I want to sharpen my essay writing skills. I can still get confused putting which point in which paragraph and if I should have put this big point before the others. I think that if I can improve on this, it will make a big difference on my future.

1c.Personal Qualities:

Responsibility

Being the oldest of two, I am always being told act more responsibly so that I can be a good role model for my brother. I know that I try, but sometimes, my trying isn't hard enough. Being responsible is one of the lifetime personal skills everyone should have. I want to become more responsible so that my parents are proud of me and that they can trust me more.

Patience

As mentioned above, I have a little brother. Sometimes, we get along pretty well. Other times, we clash like cat and dogs. Most of the time, it's because of my brother (this is my point of view!!). However, sometimes, it is because of me and my lack of patience. The thing is, my patience differs at certain times. One minute, I could be extremely patient, the next, I can't even wait for more than 10 seconds. I really hope that during my time in Galileo, I get to develop my 'patience' and prevent some more clashes,

Organization

I spend a whole day cleaning my desk and within the next hour it is completely messy again. Yep, that's my extent of organization. Even my school diary is messy!! I really need to improve my organization because it will definitely help with my future studies.

And an EXTRA one: GET RID OF MY NAIL-BITING HABIT!!!

A horrble habit I have is nail-biting. I remember when I was small, I used to hate nail clippers. So on day, my cousin (who also bit her nails) said to me, " Here's an easier way to 'cut' your nails, and you don't have to even use that clippers!!! Just BITE THEM!!!" Hence why I bite my nails. I want to get rid of this disgusting habit because... well, who wouldn't? One day, one of my family friends came over and saw me biting my nails. She said, 'apparently', if my nail became too deep and the skin started covering it, the doctors would have to use a needle to keep the nail straight. Now, I don't really know if it is true, but even if it isn't... I really want to say goodbye to nail- biting FOREVER!!!

2.Choose one of your goals (one that is important to you) and add the following details:

Goal: Public Speaking

a. Break your goal down into smaller steps.

1. Start speaking up more in class.
2. Maybe just give out speeches at random times about a random topic
3. When there is a speech coming up, get my actual speech written well before the speech date.
4. When practising, try speaking in front of my plush toys/ myself in the mirror. If I'm feeling brave, then talk in front of my parents.
5. On the date, take long deep breaths to calm myself down.
6. Try to speak with more confidence and more loudly.

b. What are some smaller sub-goals that you can aim to achieve along the way to reaching your goal?

1. Start speaking up more in class
2. Be able to improvise well
3. Stumble, but not get caught

c. What obstacles might stop you from achieving your goal?

- I usually never speak in class discussion, and my voice is kind of soft, so when I do speak, people rarely hear me
- The fact the I usually stumble or mess up at one point in the speech that the rest comes out (if it does) as mumbles

d. How will you know when you have achieved your goal?

I will know when I have achieved my goal when I can stand up in front of the class at any time and talk about any topic loud and clear, improvised or not.

  1. Hi ThaoMy,

You are not alone is being nervous about public speaking. It is the number one fear people have, even more feared than death!

I would be happy to help you in any way I can. I will try to call on you in class a little more to encourage you to add your ideas to the mix and practice speaking aloud. Practice is the only way to get better at public speaking :)

I look forward to supporting you to make progress in all areas this term,

    Carly

  2. Hi Carly,

Thanks for offering to help me.

On Tuesday, I went to a reading group with three other people and my English teacher. I wasn't really there for the poetry studying (I find that BORING!!!), but for the fact of meeting up with my teacher again. So, we read the poem. Then, we got into discussing sexism and prejudice, and I actually found it fun. At one point I found myself putting in my opinion without really being prompted (a first really) and it felt extremely weird to hear my own voice saying these things, because (other than just simply answering questions when being asked to) I had never really done that before.

Today (Wednesday), when we were having the multicultural discussion (also in a small group), I tried voicing my opinions, and I got a little more comfortable.

I think that, working from small groups to bigger, I can start getting more and more comfortable with speaking out loud.

  3. PPPS- Am I allowed to replace one of my current goals for another one? Or just add a new one? The goal is: Get rid of my nailing-biting habit
